American Indians Long before the pioneers came to Park City the Ute and Northwestern Shoshone Indians lived here during the spring and summer. These were their hunting grounds. . In fact, evidence shows that the Indians were here about 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. For years they lived in this area, peacefully until the Mormon pioneers came.
History records that settlers and Indians actually interacted on several occasions and had friendly exchanges. However as more and more trappers and Mormon pioneers came into the Park City area they competed for the food sources which caused many conflicts.
In 1853, Indians fired on four men, killing two of them. The other two escaped on horseback. Eventually, violent excursions were happening more and more frequently causing the pioneers to construct forts in Henefer, Chalk Creek, Rockport and Peoa.
As mentioned in an earlier post, Abraham Lincoln sent the military to guard the mail routes from the Indians and to look for precious metals, hoping to diversify the Mormon population with a Gold strike. Silver was discovered in upper Deer Valley which changed everything for the Indians.. Through treaties much of the Indians land was taken away and given to the pioneers. Finally, Lincoln had the Indians forcibly removed and sent them to a reservation near Roosevelt giving all the land to the pioneers.
