SILVER MINING IN PARK CITY 1869 - ONTARIO MINE

8/31/2014

Silver Mining - Park City

The first recorded mining claim in Park City was in 1869, ‘The Young American Lode.’ In 1870 it became the Ontario Mine.  In it’s day it was considered the greatest silver mine in the world.  In 1872, it was sold to George Hearst of San Francisco for $27,000.  The mine did not make any money for the first three years.  To keep the mine working Hearst sold his home and horses, dismissed his servants and even put his young son, ‘William Randolph Hearst into a public school.  The mine eventually produced $50 million in ore and had paid George more than $12 million in dividends.  This and his other mines became the source of his extensive financial empire.

The Ontario Mine is up straight up Marsac on the right just before you turn left to go up to Silver Lake.

Did you know that the Park City area had Indians there since the time of Christ. That is over 2000 years ago.  What makes that so amazing is they didn't have horses there until about 500 years ago.

Utah seeks Statehood

The Park Record reports that the United States Government does not believe Utah will be granted statehood due to their practice of Polygamy.  It has been stated, “The stumbling block for Utah is the relation of Church and State and Polygamy. Until that is removed petitions, State Constitutions and delegates or commissioners to Washington will avail nothing. Here is where the trouble lies.  Remove these great evils, and perhaps Utah might stand a little show to be admitted.”

I am Diania (pronounced Di Anna and I love Park City and so will you..  Born and raised in El Paso, Texas I never envisioned a place so wonderful existed.  Before I started FASTAXI, I owned Deep Powder Transportation and learned about the trials, troubles and fun of being a taxi driver in Park City and being a guest, trying to get a ride.  With over100 taxi companies, it's amazing, sometimes there are no taxi's available, especially after 2 a.m.

I know this space is suppose to be about me but what makes Park City so wonderful is the locals, the culture and the magnificent beauty.  The people here are genuinely nice.  They aren't pretending.

But a word of warning:  DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE IN PARK CITY.  Our main road is called the gauntlet for a reason.  Ask any local and they will tell you...if you drink and drive in Park City, you are going to have a very bad encounter with our police department.
